Obituary of Betty L. Sand

Sand, Betty L., 82, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018. Betty was born in Yonkers, New York, moving to St. Petersburg for her senior year of High School in 1954. After graduating from St. Petersburg High School, she married Wesley J. Carr, Sr. Together they adopted two children, Wesley Jr. and Lisa. Wesley Sr. went to be with the angels in 1971, and Betty married Nels R. Sand in 1977. They were married until 1991 when Nels went to heaven to wait with Wesley Sr. for Betty. She bowled for many years at Meadowlawn / Sunrise Lanes, spending many Saturdays teaching youth bowling. Betty worked for and retired from E – Systems, now called Raytheon. Even after retirement, Betty and her friends from Raytheon stayed in touch and she considered them family. Betty volunteered at Cross Bayou Elementary when her grandchildren attended there. She was lovingly referred to as not only the class Grandma, but also the school Grandma. She was predeceased in death by her parents, William and Frances; as well as her husbands, Wesley J. Carr, Sr. and Nels R. Sand. She is survived by her son, Wesley J. Carr, Jr; daughter, Lisa A. Phelps and husband John; grandchildren, Joshua and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Janelle; and a sister, Dolores Hubbard. A special thanks to Kathy Grabowski for her friendship and unconditional love she gave to Betty. You made her laugh and smile and we are eternally grateful. Thank you to Susie Meyer and the rest of the Raytheon Crew who were with her to the end. Thanks to the staff at Magnolia Gardens who did their best to make her last year a good one. Lastly, a special thank you to Hospice Woodside. They went out of their way to make Betty make the transition with grace and dignity.
