Obituary of Claude Kilpatrick

LT. Col (Ret) Claude “Sam” Kilpatrick Jr., age 78, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2018, at the James A Haley VA Hospice Cove.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Brigitte, two daughters, Britta Carter and Michelle Mulvihill and their husbands Trae and Mike respectively.  He leaves behind four grandchildren, Justin and Tyler Carter and Lexie and Jake Mulvihill.  In addition, he is survived by his two brothers, Dr. Rev. Joseph Kilpatrick and Ron Kilpatrick and their wives Mary Ann and Jenelle.

Sam is a veteran of Korea and the Vietnam War.  He earned many medals to include the Legion of Merit (which he was most proud of), Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Korea Defense Service Medal.   He was born in Greenville, SC. to Claude Kilpatrick Sr. and Lois Owen Kilpatrick in 1940.  He enlisted in the US Army at the age of 21 and received a direct commission as an officer in 1967.  He attended the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS., after having earned a Master’s degree in Business from Boston University.  Sam and his family moved 22 times across the country and overseas in Germany for three tours.

In 1990, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Army after serving almost 30 years.  Following his retirement in Atlanta, GA., he managed a non-profit organization that assisted mentally and physically challenged adults in the work force.

Sam was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a patient and loving husband, father and grandfather (aka Opa).  During his retirement in Destin, FL and then on to Tampa, FL.  he enjoyed painting land and seascapes.  He often taught disabled veterans how to paint.  Sam was also involved with the AVAST (Assisting Veterans of America Support Team) by helping amputee veterans play golf on Fridays.  Sam took great pride in supporting wounded Veterans and felt it was important to give back to those who fought for our country.  Along with his involvement to the Veterans, he spent a lot of time with his grandchildren.  He thoroughly enjoyed watching all their football and basketball games and swim meets.  The love and pride he had for his family, friends and military never left him as we can all attest.

A memorial will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm.  The address is 7820 38th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL. 33710.  Following the service, the burial will be at Bay Pines National Cemetery at 2:30 pm.  The address is at 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St Petersburg, FL 33708.  He will be buried with military honors.
