Obituary of Philip McAvoy Hill, Sr

Philip McAvoy Hill, Sr., of St. Petersburg, Florida and Blairsville, Georgia completed his journey to heaven on May 1, 2019. He was 85. Born at Mound Park Hospital on October 22, 1933 to the late Marjorie and Robert J. Hill, Sr.

Phil attended North Ward Elementary School, Mirror Lake Junior High School, St. Petersburg High School (Class of 1951), St. Petersburg Junior College and Florida State University. He served in the United States Air Force as meteorologist based at Furstenfeldbruck Air Base in Germany. He went to work for Florida Power Corporation beginning in 1960 and after 33 years he retired as Manager of Energy Services, South Suncoast Division.

He was a lifetime member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served in many different ways. Phil enjoyed singing with the choir, serving on the board of Trustees, playing and coaching softball, bowling and volunteering. God and Christ United Methodist Church were his great loves. He was also an affiliate member of First United Methodist Church of Union County in Blairsville, Georgia. In Blairsville, he volunteered for over 20 years at the Chamber of Commerce.

He is preceded in death by his brothers and sisters in law, Bob & Eileen Hill and Bill & Jenny Hill. Phil is survived by his wife of more than 58 years Sue Drew Hill, sons Philip, Charles and Kevin (Claire). Three grandchildren Benjamin and Claudia Hill and Bianca Bautista.

Phil loved his family, friends and the community of St. Petersburg. Laughter was sweet music to his ears; he enjoyed a good story and was always ready to lend a helping hand. We are blessed and comforted with so many wonderful memories of this remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Christ United Methodist Church Chapel Organ Lift Repair Project.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 467 First Avenue North, St. Petersburg, Florida on May 11, 2019 at 11am. Interment at Bay Pines National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
