Obituary of Matt Marriott

Matt Marriott, 46, of St. Petersburg, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2020. He was an Emmy award winning cinematographer and still photographer in St Petersburg with close to two decades of professional experience in travel, food, sports, wildlife, aerial and underwater photography. As a Navy veteran and photojournalist, he has had the fortune to have lived and worked around the globe, predominantly in the Middle East and Latin America. Matt is proud to serve as a photo ambassador to The Leonard DiCaprio Foundation and The Shark Conservation Fund, documenting and educating the public on their various projects worldwide. Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Betty and Robert Baggs of Newark, Ohio and Helen and Robert Marriott of Granville, Ohio.  He is survived by his father, Philip (Beth) Marriott; mother Barbara (Larry) Baggs Hunter; girlfriend Allison Cox; son Van Maverick Cox-Marriott and stepdaughter Mila Cox, who were both the loves of his life; his brother Justin (Megan) Marriott; nephew Grayson Marriott; and niece Madeline Marriott.

In his own words: “My experiences have profoundly shaped my worldview and my passions, which are ocean conservation, diving, archaeology, traveling off-the-beaten-path and of course food. My camera is a key that has unlocked many doors that would otherwise be closed to me. I have been invited to witness some pretty amazing things and to document the work of countless dedicated professionals. I’m happy to share theirs’ and my life’s work with you and the world.” –MM

Matt’s urn will be interred at Bay Pines National Cemetery with private family services held at a later date.

Mike Baker, one of Matt’s dearest friends from high school, would like to honor his best friend by supporting his son, Van Cox-Marriott.  In lieu of flowers, please feel free to honor Matt. The family is overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of love for Matt from friends in Kentucky, Navy buddies, friends at the University of Florida and friends in the photography world.
