Obituary of Rick Badgley

Richard “Rick” Badgley, age 74, passed away in St. Petersburg, Florida on February 3, 2021. Born November 20, 1946, Rick grew up in St. Petersburg and attended Boca Ciega High School. In 1968 he earned his undergraduate degree from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. After graduating, Rick enlisted in the United States Air Force where he met his wife Gala whom he was married to from 1969-2003. Upon his honorable discharge, he studied at Mercer College of Law in Macon, Georgia earning a law degree in 1977. Moving back to Florida, Rick entered private practice law. He transitioned out of law after some time to pursue his passion for writing, buying a local newspaper called the Pinellas Sentinel of which he ran and edited. Rick returned to his law career taking a position as a city of St. Petersburg City Attorney. He dedicated 28 years of expertise to St. Petersburg, specializing in real estate contract law.

Upon retirement, Rick turned to his passion for art. Many pieces of his art were displayed at various times at local galleries in St. Petersburg, most notably his wood sculptures. He also loved reading and was a talented writer.

Rick loved spending time with his family and friends. Always quick with wit, he easily and quickly made new friends. He loved talking to people, smiling, and building relationships with those around him. He was a teacher to many, and most certainly, was always up for a good time and a party.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Grayum and Florida Rose (Kummer) Badgley, and his brother, David Grayum Badgley. He is survived by his son Joshua Bond (Janice) Badgley of Palmetto, FL; and his two nephews, Carl and Geoff Badgley.  

The family plans to hold a Celebration of Rick’s Life at a later date, and service details will be posted at that time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be placed to The Russell Home for severely disabled children or a charity of arts of their choosing.
