Every once in a while you meet someone who becomes a true friend. It was always a pleasure to be with Ambrose. He may have exaggerated some of his stories he told, but I doubt it. We both got older and did not get to see each other very often in the past few years but I did have the good fortune to talk with him by phone a few weeks ago. Ambrose was one of a kind . He will be missed by all who had the luck to know him and his family. George

Dr. Updegraff performed surgery for many years at Ed White Hospital and for 8 years I assisted him weekly. He was a perfectionist and very skilled. His patients loved him. Every year at Christmas, he would make a special trip into our nurse's lounge to hand delivered wrapped presents to the members of his O.R. team. Every year, he gave a wrapped set of crystal glasses to me. I still have sets for champagne, wine, water goblets and more. What delight he would have watching us enjoy being rewarded and sharing the holiday joy. He would talk of his family often during surgery especially if "Morning Has Broken" came on the radio in the background. He will be remembered for all his sharing and care.

To Ramona.....Steve and family,
What a beautiful life he led....and what a beautiful tribute he was to our community from his brilliance in medicine, where we shared laughter at the SPYC, where he contributed so much time and effort to Nina Harris where my sister got her education.....I loved and honored him deeply. Be proud and each of you continue to carry him with you as you make your mark. He will always be with us.....everyone who he has touched.

Thinking of your family with deep respect, great love and many warm memories. Dr. Updegraff was a fine man and an excellent physician. We were very blessed to have wonderful parents and amazing childhoods.

We send our love to the Updegraff family. As neighbors while we both raised our families, we have so many wonderful memories. All of them involve the warmth of family, great humor mixed with wisdom, and the friendships that make for the joy of special neighbors. Ambrose taught me so much beyond celebrating family - things as diverse as how to stucco my walls to how to get a raccoon out the third floor attic! (Peanut butter!) His love of the outdoors was infectious, and he will be with us in our memories, always smiling and willing to help everyone. Thank you my friend...

Steve, my deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. Ramona, I will never forget how kind Ambrose and you were to me when I was a new ophthalmologist in town 36 years ago. May the wonderful memories of Ambrose give you comfort.
