Obituary of William McSorley

              On Tuesday, February 24th, 2021, William Joseph McSorley sought eternal rest with our Lord at Sun Coast Hospice Care- Bayfront Hospital. Bill suffered a massive stroke the week prior and fought till the end. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lynette L. McSorley(nee; St. Mary), his sister Juli McSorley(New York, NY), brother Thomas McSorley(Brussels, Belgium), and his two sons James and Daniel. He is preceded in death by his father John Edward, mother Elaine Niquette, and sister Patricia Ann (Patty).

              Bill was born in Portage, Wisconsin on January 22nd, 1955, as Jack and Elaine McSorley’s youngest child. He was an excellent multi-sport athlete at Portage High School and crowned Homecoming King and All-Conference Honors in Football and Basketball. Bill played college basketball at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater in Accounting and received his Certified Public Accountant designation a few years later. Bill enjoyed his work and professional relationships at Johnson Controls, Phillip Morris, Tropicana, J.B. Rudolph, and Capital Formation Consultants. Bill was active in church ministry as a 9:30 usher and Knights of Columbus. He was looking forward to retirement to pursue his love of gardening, travel, and enjoying life.

              McSorley projected his love of sports into all aspects of his life and was always ready to grab a beer with friends and watch a game, or attend any sporting events. Bill loved the sports-fan atmosphere and encouraged his son Jimmy to pursue college basketball coaching. His vast knowledge of sports will not be forgotten. Bill also grew up in a very musical household, and some would say if sports were his first passion, music was his second. Bill loved to go to concerts and even met Lynette at a Summerfest- Tommy James and the Shondells concert in Milwaukee. Bill supported both of his boys in their musical endeavors and was proud to have a Gator Performing Arts musician in Danny. Bill found great pride in coaching and teaching his sons for basketball, baseball and football and made it to almost every game to see them in action.

              Bill always found a way to make friends everywhere he went; now, at the time of his passing, we are comforted to believe that Bill will continue to make friends in heaven and take along his favorite dog companion Jack. Bill relocated to St. Petersburg in 1986, and Lynette followed the following year. They quickly embraced the Florida lifestyle with boating, beaches, and bars (sand bars too). Bill and Lynette were married for 33 years. He was an amazing and handsome husband, and most importantly, a fabulous father to his two sons. We will all miss Bill’s smile, joyful eyes, and witty sense of humor.

              On March 1st, 2021, the McSorley family will be holding a Celebration of Life visitation at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home at 22nd Avenue N and Dr. MLK Street in Bill’s beloved St. Petersburg, Florida, from 4 pm – 8 pm.  There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at his parish of St. Raphael Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, at 4 pm as well.  Please come and celebrate Bill’s life with stories, pictures, and good memories to share. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Suncoast Hospice in Bill's honor.
