I consider Coach Reed more than a coach, but he was more like a father figure to me. I am incredibly blessed to have been coached by him at both Shorecrest Prep and in the Cape Cod League with the Wareham Gatemen. My parents got divorced prior to my senior year of high school and Coach Reed took me in and pushed me harder then I had ever been pushed. He taught me how to set outrageous goals and then exceed them. He helped me convert to a catcher and there was no better teacher of the art of catching than Coach Reed. He always took time to throw extra batting practice and he loved the "power strap" that really gave me confidence. I loved every one of his stories and even if I already knew the ending of about 90% of the baseball stories he told, I cherished every word each and every time.
I got to see firsthand how beloved he was in Cape Cod. He pushed the Wareham Gatemen hard and we attacked every game in that summer league as it was Game 7 of the World Series. He coached us to winning the Cape Cod League Championship in 1997 and that is one of my fondest memories playing baseball. He wore that championship ring with so much pride.
I admired his relationship with his incredible wife, Shirley. He always rushed home to see her after baseball camps and games and you could see how he made her a priority in his life.
Coach Reed taught me so much more than the game of baseball, he taught me how to be a MAN. I will continue to tell my three sons the stories of Coach Don Reed and pass along his baseball legacy to the next generation.

Loved talking with Coach Don at Suncoast Fitness and am very sad to hear of his passing. He was such a kind man, always cheerful to talk with and will be truly missed by all of us who worked out at Suncoast Fitness in the mornings. His baseball knowledge was incredible. May God Bless the Reed family with peace. In sympathy, Matt Lord

Sitting in the locker room at Suncoast Fitness, talking about the Cape Cod League or the Cubs or the Rays. "I gotta tell ya ..." Don would say. He had a thousand baseball stories. He never said anything bad about anyone, never complained about his knees or his back, and never forgot to swing by and say hello. Don reminded me in many ways of my dad. A kind, gentle, decent man who always made you smile. What an honor to have known him.

We were so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. We attended adult Bible Study under the leadership of Pastor Jerry Straszheim with Don and Shirley and others for many years at Lutheran Church of the Cross. It was a joy to attend classes with Don and we always appreciated his insights.
Our prayers are with Shirley and the family.
Much Love, Dave and Denice Higman

He was one of the best. At Shorecrest with Bobby Thigpen '98-'00 he taught me how to be a better player and a better man. I could still hear his voice in my head when I went on to play in college, more so than my college coach. One thing I always remember is going over to his house in Venetian Isles to look at video of college and major league pitchers and look at recorded video of myself to work on certain mechanics. Shirley would offer me lemonade and his dogs would want to be rubbed on the couch. He cared about his players non stop. The baseball world lost a big one last week. You'll be missed Coach!

Don was the best coach I ever played for, totally dedicated and detail oriented. If it was raining and you had practice, he had rubber coated baseballs to practice bunting in the outfield. I remember after practice Shirley and the boys would be there so be could practice with Curt and Jeff. Between he and Tom Bertino, they were Joliet Colt League at Ingalls Park. They are both gone now, but will never be forgotten by the many that they influenced.
Thanks for the time I had with him

Lorrie (and family), please accept my sincere condolences regarding the death of your father. I remember your dad as being a coach with high, but realistic, expectations of each of the boys/young men he coached. He could be quite vocal at times, and there was more than one occasion where I honestly thought his passionate ‘opinion’ would decalcify the spine of the strongest umpire. He had a good eye for natural talent, but also recognized lesser talent coupled with the zeal to improve. I also remember how he tended and groomed the lawn at your house on Cassie Drive to rival the best baseball field turf. He was a good leader, both for family (with your mother always there to bring out his softer side) and for the many boys and men he coached. May God bless him.
