Obituary of Joan Gorrell White

White, Joan Treva passed away April 22, 2021 in Tampa, FL. She was born in Greensboro, NC on Feb. 6, 1937, the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth Gorrell. She graduated from Curry High School in Greensboro and the University of Maryland.

Survivors include husband, Col. (Ret.) Billy T. White, U.S. Army; sons Jeffrey Paul (Ione) James (Tampa, FL) and Jesse Scott (Janet) James (Boise, ID); granddaughters Debra Renee (Kyle) Schmidt and Emma Joan Marie James; great-grandchildren Jack, Rebecca, and Matthew Schmidt.  She is also survived by her sister, Kae Rivenbark and her children Kelly Joan (Scott) Gammer, Mark Cameron (Sheila) Rivenbark and Julie Kae (Paul) Cronan, Suzanne White and her son, Robert Evans (Niki) of Savannah.

TJ, as her friends called her, loved her days as an Army wife, even the constant moves from Army post to Army post.  She especially enjoyed living overseas in Germany and Japan.  She was a devoted Red Cross volunteer at Ft. Lewis, WA during the Vietnam War working with wounded soldiers sent there to recuperate.

Socially, she enjoyed time with her family, golf buddies, church friends and neighbors.  She was a member of the Vinoy Golf Club, Beech Mountain Golf Club and the First Presbyterian Church (St Petersburg, FL).

Graveside service will be April 28, 2021, at 1pm at the Alamance Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC, where her family built and supported the church for generations.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated.
