I am sorry Raymond; I didn’t know you had left us. Your obituary should have said so much more than you left written. I will fill in the blanks for you the best that I can, because you deserve the world to know what a full and interesting life you led.
Raymond was the stepson of my great-aunt Evelyn R (Leggett) Ott who was married to Raymond’s father, August of 1942. His father's name was Harry E Ott from Indianapolis, Indiana, he passed away on June, 28 1976. Harry, we called him uncle Ed, was a fun and very loving man. Harry served in the U.S. Army as a S/Sgt. receiving an honorable discharge in1945. Raymond was also preceded in death by his mother, I believe her name was Rebecca Ott of Indianapolis, Indiana and his sister Becky who resided in Dayton, Ohio.
The years prior to his retirement from Honeywell and following Raymond would spend his off time traveling solo, with friends and family while also relaxing in Dayton with Evelyn and his sister Becky. After uncle Harry and Becky passed away my great-aunt Evelyn moved to Indianapolis to live near her niece, my mother Darlene Welsh. This is when Raymond was introduced to Evelyn and my mother’s Wisconsin extended family, suddenly Raymond’s family circle had grown greatly. When Raymond would schedule a visit to Indianapolis there was a full agenda awaiting him upon his arrival, consisting of all his favorite things to do during his stay. During Raymond’s visits to Indianapolis, we all would visit some of his favorite restaurants, local sightseeing and special events, shopping and most of all just visiting with family, grilling out and relaxing around the pool. Raymond loved spending time on a cruise ship, occasionally he and my great-aunt would cruise together. We had the pleasure of Raymond’s presence during holidays, weddings and often just time of quiet well deserved relaxation.
Raymond was a kind man with a fun, dry sense of humor, he always enjoying everywhere he went and open to a conversation with anyone, he loved people. He liked sharing lots of stories of his military adventures in the Air Force and also of his many years with Honeywell. He was a “foodie” before the term foodie was coined, loving food and the experiences created around food. I think Raymond was a bit of a wine connoisseur and he would probably agree with me. He was quite knowledgeable about wine and the industry and always enjoyed a nice glass of wine, Cabernet Sauvignon as I recall was his favorite.
Raymond had a close and loving relationship with my great aunt and was also a good friend to my mother, they jokenly deemed themselves as adopted-cousins. After my great-aunt, my mother and other expended family members passed away Raymonds visits to Indianapolis were less frequent and soon stopped.
Bon voyage Raymond, thanks for the moments and memories you left with us all. With love, Debbie, Tom, Shannon, Melissa Ford and your Indy and Wisconsin friends.
