Between 1974 to 1978 I might have spent the night at the Waterbury home more than 50 times to hang with my best friend, Matt, during our St. John's years. First, what a cool house it was. Creaking stairs, hidden passages and the best part, Matt lived in the servants quarters, allowing us to sneak out at anytime of the night to perform nefarious acts which never seemed to come to fruition.
Joan, I will miss the following in no particular order:
1. You ringing the outside dinner bell so wherever we were on Pass-A-Grille we knew we had 5 minutes to get home.
2. Looking at me with cheater glasses halfway down your nose and calling me David, Matthew, Damian then Shannon Rory to let me know supper's on.
3. Driving Matt & I to Tuesday night Novena's as Altar boys.
4. Your insatiable laugh, because nothing (especially what Ed just said) is that important.
Thank you for being the person you were. You will be missed. Your 7th son.
Rory Shannon

Thanks, Rory, for remembering my mom the way she truly was. One of the things that I will remember most about my mom is her laugh.

Thanks for the nice tribute Rory and great memories. Mom always enjoyed having you over even if she called you by the wrong name!

So how many of us have Joan's "Noodle Bake" recipe?!? That recipe is just one of the many treasures that Joan shared with me throughout the decades. I loved listening to her stories of growing up in NY, Pop-Pop's courtship, and sharing her interest in mysteries and sewing.
On one of my first trips to Florida, Joanie introduced me to a Manhattan! I couldn't drink it! It was too strong for me, but I liked the cherry! I think this was the first time I saw her laugh so hard that she had tears in her eyes! When Matthew came into the kitchen and saw us laughing like a couple of schoolgirls, he just grinned ... The beginning of our relationship was solidified!
I will always be beyond grateful to her for her selfless devotion to our little family. Back in 2001, with preterm labor at 20 weeks imminent and 4 other little ones at home, Joanie came to help us for several weeks while I was in the hospital. She didn't hesitate. She jumped right in and handled home life for us so Matthew and I could focus on saving our little one. I can still hear her laughing as she recalled tiptoeing past Ian's room, making oatmeal "just right", and helping Meghan with her hairbows before school!
More than anything, I am deeply indebted to Joan and thank her with all my heart for raising her son, Matthew, to be the man, husband, father, and friend he is today. I love you Momma Joan and will miss you very much. May your laughter now be heard by the angels in heaven and in our hearts forever.

Over the 50 years that I have known Joan, I have enjoyed many fun-filled times in her presence.I so remember the Sunday afternoons when Ed would invite a few families over to swim and have dinner.and Joanie would graciously make spaghetti and meatballs for twenty of us! In later years, Joan was part of the "Vina Group" as we enjoyed the theater, museum visits, and celebrations of Birthdays! Her great empathy made sad times easier to bear and her lilting laughter made good times even more wonderful to share! Rest in Peace "Classy Lady".

Nancy, one of the great gifts our mother gave us children was friendship with the Shannon family. Thank you for being such a wonderful and faithful friend to our mom.

Our darling Joan will always be remembered with love. She was our wonderful next-door neighbor for years. I learned so much about being a mom to boys, how to be a friend and how to laugh and smile at everything…there was never a challenge so great that it could not be fixed with a smile; and smile she did. With love and prayers to her wonderful children and blessings for all. We are all blessed to have another angel in Heaven looking out for all of us

In grade school, Mom and I would often go over to the St. Pete Beach Library when it was showing a National Geographic film. We would finish off the evening with a Dairy Queen soft vanilla ice cream cone dipped in chocolate while we discussed the film!

A great memory is Mom always reminding me how I tried to convince my kindergarten teach that she (Joan) was a movie star. She would always get a kick out of the story and say how the teacher had showed incredulity on her face when Mom had arrived that day to pick me up, and then showed relief when mom fessed up that she was not a movie star!

Mom,
I will miss your voice, your laugh, your smile, your even keel, and our interesting conversations about history, literature and archaeology. However, I know that you will be our advocate in heaven, praying for us as you always have. Thank you for all the love, kindness and laughs you gave me!
Love Matthew

Dear Mom,
I will miss you so much. You were always in my corner and loved me in a way no one else can replicate. You are irreplaceable. I am so grateful for our time together. You are my angel in heaven now. Not having you here will be very lonely, but my dear and beloved mother, I will try to be strong like you always were in your life. I love you.
