Obituary of Helen Mays Wingert

Helen M. Wingert, 91, of St. Petersburg, passed away on July 2, 2021 under the care of Suncoast Hospice Empath Health. She was born in Newburgh, NY and raised in Allegany County, NY. She graduated from Belfast Central as Valedictorian. After WWII, Helen married Dutch Wingert of Caneadea, NY and they settled in Tampa, Florida in 1955, where they raised their 4 children and she spent her career in education as a teacher and guidance counselor.

Helen graduated with the Charter Class of USF with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and went on to also earn her Master’s Degree from USF. She started her career teaching at Citrus Park Elementary, but spent most of her career as a Guidance Counselor at Plant High School. She also spent over 11 years volunteering full-time at Central High School in Brooksville, FL and another 5 years volunteering at Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, FL after “retiring.”

Helen is survived by her children Deborah Huff, John Wingert, Linda Mickey and Melanie Batten, 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She spent her final 17 years living with her daughter, Linda Mickey, spending much time knitting socks to keep her family’s feet warm. She will forever be a voice of love and reason in our hearts and minds.

A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held Saturday, July 24th at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 Dr. MLK Street North at 10am and her urn will be interred afterward at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Tampa, FL.
