Dear Jim and family,
I am so sorry to read about the loss of your beloved Karen. Jim I remember fondly the time we were all shopping in Costco and you came over to say "hello" and have Karen and I meet each other. May the memory of your love bring you strength and peace.
Fondly,
Peggy Coleman

Jim and family I am truly sorry to read about Karen’s passing. I often think of you both although it’s been almost 10 years since my retirement from my nursing position in home health and my times helping with Karen’s health needs. You and Karen were a special couple devoted to each other through many trying and challenging times always keeping your senses of humor and helping me to keep mine. I grew to consider you both my friends and cherished the times we spent together. Karen always had a sparkle in her eyes especially when she talked about her family. Our children were about the same ages and we shared many stories. Jim,you were one of the most devoted husbands i have ever had the privilege of working with. Your love for this special lady was evident no matter what was involved. I so respected you for this.
Thank you for let ting me be part of your lives and I wish you and your family the best. I loved watching the video on this site. Special times!
With fond memories, Ariel Grant

I met Karen & Jim in 2010, as a recently divorced single mom of 3. It was time for her to start Physical Therapy & I was thankful for the employment opportunity for Home Health. In spite of Karen's dog trying to eat me at every visit, Karen bravely worked with me & pushed herself through the exercises, no matter how intimidating, painful or difficult. There was never a day that Jim wasn't right by her side, cheering her on. Karen steadily gained strength & greater function in spite of occasional setbacks. She and Jim never gave up. If circumstances exhausted Karen's endurance, Jim's strength would carry her through ...whether she liked it or not! They helped each other, built each other up and were each other's most devoted advocates.
As time went on week after week, I watched this exceptional couple. While Karen's function & endurance improved, I had the fortunate privilege of observing this amazing couple interacting in real life. They had more difficult challenges than most of us have to face but every challenge was navigated with a quiet strength, humor and determination. Although frustration was a constant option, Jim & Karen maintained a positive disposition and an ongoing sense of humor that lifted us all above the temptation to slip into negativity. Make no mistake that was a conscious decision fueled by pure willpower!
Karen was not what you'd classify as a natural athlete, but she was uber determined! In spite of her lack of fondness for exercise, she was "all-in" and gave it her all! Our sessions settled into a routine that involved a lot of hard work and unfortunately a lot of pain as well. Yet, it was always sprinkled with laughter, often of the belly laugh variety, and frequently from less than appropriate content!
Jim would eventually wander downstairs to busy himself with other chores. Whatever Karen lacked in muscular strength she made up for in hearing! Stopping mid exercise & calling down ..."Jim, what are you doing?" was not uncommon because with her super human auditory powers, she could heard a wrapper crinkle or a kitten whisker fall; from our upstairs perch she could determine what was happening downstairs & across the house! Sometimes Jim would resurface with a report of low blood sugar with peanut butter on his breath or the cat would show up with one less whisker! Many times mid exercise she would just casually tell me what Jim was doing downstairs & he was never the wiser.
Through it all I admired their unconditional dedication to one another, their multifaceted love for each other and their grown kids, grandkids, pets...and even the occasional stray. They had a generous & compassionate heart towards all people and had even greater loyalty to those of us that they employed. I can't count the number of times I was overwhelmed by their fairness & generosity. Many, many times I commented with admiration that they were the most amazing couple I'd ever known.
I was fortunate and privileged to witness this unique glimpse within the life of Karen & Jim. I secretly considered Karen to be a mentor to me. She was wise and her speech was tempered. My conversations were too often unbridled and rather "hot-headed" concerning my own emotional stressors & frustrations. She was never judgmental and her example of careful, reflective speech made a big impact on helping me to become more self-aware and less reactive. Though unaware of her contribution, she helped me become a better person.
I will always hold Karen and Jim in highest regard & admiration. Karen's friendship, strength and wisdom continue to live on in me. Her rock solid character, compassion & courage touched many people and her life will forever remain a legacy of love for all.
Becki Westra, with the fondest of loving memories.
