Obituary – Albert J. Geiger, Jr., M.D.

Albert J. Geiger, Jr. M.D., 91, of St. Petersburg died August 17, 2021. He came with his parents to St. Petersburg from Winter Park, Florida in 1934. As a youth he was a Boy Scout and at age 13, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Dr. Geiger earned a B.A. degree from Princeton University in 1951 and an M.D. degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 1955. After service in the U.S. Navy, he completed a residency and fellowship in Radiology at Emory University Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology and belonged to multiple professional organizations.

In 1962, he accepted the position of radiologist at the Suncoast Medical Clinic of St. Petersburg. He remained with the Clinic for 18 years, then went into private practice. Upon retiring from medicine, Dr. Geiger accepted a teaching position in the Department of Applied Ethics at St. Petersburg Junior College, teaching until final retiring in 1995.

Dr. Geiger was a life member of the Pinellas County Medical Society, the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America and numerous other professional organizations. He was a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Suncoast Medical Clinic and a long-time member of the medical staffs of Bayfront Medical Center and St. Anthony’s Hospital.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, having initially joined as a youngster in 1938. He was a past Lay Leader of the church and served on numerous church committees, including the Board of Trustees. But he felt that his most meaningful service in the church was the years he spent as the leader of an adult Bible Study class.

In the community, he was a past president of the Rotary Club of St Petersburg, and the Suncoasters. He was also a past president and pastchairman of the board of the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony (now known as the Florida Orchestra). He served on the boards of multiple community charitable and serviceorganizations and was a charter trustee of the Canterbury School of Florida. He was a recipient of the Golden Baton Award, of the Florida Orchestra and the Achievement Award from the Pinellas County Medical Society. He has also received the Boy Scout District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. He was named a Distinguished Citizen honoree by the West Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America in 2002.

Dr. Geiger was preceded in death by his parents, Albert J. Geiger, Sr. and Sara Frances Asbury Geiger and by his sister, Martha. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Laura Marvine, their three children, Albert J. Geiger, III, Laura G. Hornsby, Suzanne G. Ballenger, and four grandchildren: Tricia Hornsby, T.J. Hornsby, Brittany Ballenger and Ethan Ballenger.

Dr. Geiger’s memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg, 212 3rd Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33701 on Thursday, September 2nd at 11am.

A private interment will held at Bay Pines Cemetery.
