Hugh Harvey, III

Obituary of Hugh Harvey, III

Hugh Harvey, III was born August 21, 1955 to Hugh Harvey Jr and Hilda Marie Merrey Harvey in Baltimore, Maryland. Hugh left us peacefully for his Heavenly home on August 14, 2021 at his residence in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Hugh lived with his beloved Stephen Baker in Martinsburg, West Virginia before moving to their St. Petersburg home.

Hugh graduated from Wheaton High School in 1973 and then from Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland in 1975. He continued his education at the University of Maryland graduating in 1978 with a degree in Music Education. From the age of five, he sang in all church choirs available to him beginning with Northwood Appold United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland and concluding with Allendale United Methodist in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Music was his true passion in life. He was a member of the Washington Savoyards Company directed by Audrey Shipp for many years, even bringing his nephew into the cast. His favorite part was playing

Nanki-Poo in Gilbert & Sullivans “The Mikado.” Hugh was Director of the Gaithersburg Chorus from 1990 until December 2014.

In a 2012 Washington Examiner interview he offered these words: “I’ve been playing music since I was five. It runs in the family…I graduated from the University of Maryland in music education, and I played instruments all through public school. I played piano, and I added the violin, then I added viola and cello. The whole time I was singing in church and my high school chorus.”

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Warren and parents, Hilda and Hugh Harvey Jr..

He leaves behind his husband, Stephen Baker, whom he married April 20, 2020; a sister, Jeanne Harvey Duncan and family; daughters, Kathryn and Lauren and Antwan Ames and three grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jonathan and Jasmine as well as countless others that had been blessed to know him.

Hugh retired from AT&T and worked as a government contractor in network security for the FAA.

Hugh was an enthusiastic conversationalist, full of BFs “boring facts”. His knowledge came from his love of music, genealogy, history, cooking and remembering. He filled the room with his love, laughter and voice and all were always welcome. As his cousin stated “he was born with the ability to project to the last row of the sanctuary.”
