My mother, Gloria Lewallen, was a long time friend and neighbor of Helen’s at the Bayfront Tower. Mom loved
watching Auburn football games in Helen’s
Auburn decorated condo, down to the Auburn fight
song for her doorbell. Mom met Helen through
my father, Linwood Lewallen as he attended St. Pete.
High School and Auburn with Helen. While my
father died in 1966 Mom and Helen enjoyed their wonderful friendship until my mom died ten
days before Helen. I can imagine my mom, dad and Helen playing the Auburn fight song and yelling
“War Eagle” in heaven.

Otto Krauss was a friend in St Pete of my late father, Jack Hart. Otto and his wife took my father and mother ( who attended Auburn for one year after Alabama College for Women at Montevallo, so her path may not have crossed that of Otto’s sister ) on their big boat around 1957, when we came and visited wit Otto and Deedee??? I was only 12 then. My father’s father had a winter home in St Pete, and later told my father he should go into the air conditioning business. My father did not, but had good childhood friends. Charlie Hart. Gadsden, Alabama.

This is late in coming. I continue to miss my dear friend every day. We had such lovely talks and visits right up until December of last year when we discussed our next visit being after the new year. Her passing came as a real surprise, as I thought she would just keep on going, like the Energizer Bunny (what I often called her). I got to know Helen through SPC and our mutual affection for our pups (who were very similar). We started out with a few pup dates, and then found it easier to enjoy our walks without them. We had lovely visits downtown, out and about, as well as in her home. We enjoyed a few Grand Prix races together. We visited the James Museum across the street, where at 98, she decided to buy a lifetime membership. She loved peanut butter (and corn dogs) and said she wished there was such a thing as peanut butter beer, so that's what she got from me for her last few birthdays. (I don't think she even finished ONE.) My most special memory is the day I took her on a "trip down memory lane," where she showed me the homes she lived in, the business location by Gibbs High, the places she would hang and eat, etc. She loved reminiscing about her special times in St. Pete, as did I since it is my hometown. Helen was AMAZING right up until the very end. She was deeply loved.
