Obituary of Antonius Michel Sowma
Antonius “Tony” Michel Sowma D.D.S., 60, of Feather Sound, Clearwater, FL passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Northside Hospital in St Petersburg, FL. Mr. Sowma was born in Paramaribo, Suriname on January 16, 1962 as the son of the late Jacob and Rieke Sowma. Antonius grew up in his native Suriname until he moved to Florida to attend the University of Florida (UF) in 1983. After graduating UF in 1987, Mr. Sowma attended Howard University in Washington, D.C where he graduated in 1991 as Doctor of Dental Surgery. Upon graduation, Antonius relocated to Clearwater, FL where he established his dental practice (Antonius M. Sowma, DDS, PA) in Palm Harbor, FL. He retired in 2010.
Antonius was always considered “the Life of the Party” by his friends and associates and enjoyed taking those friends and coworkers on all expense paid trips across the country. Once his son was born, Tony focused exclusively on “all things Kyle” and dedicated the years on rearing his son despite the challenges he faced living with multiple sclerosis.
Mr. Sowma is preceded in death by his father, Jacob “Albert” Sowma, brother, Stephen Brian Sowma and adopted brother Ishvar Harry.
Tony is survived by his teenage son, Kyle Stephen Sowma, of Feather Sound. He is also survived by his mother, Rieke Sowma of Paramaribo, Suriname; his brother Jeffry (John) of St Petersburg, FL; sister Rachell and Family and his brothers Eric (Machella) and Family, Roberto (Manuella) and Family, and adopted brother Suresh Harry all of Paramaribo, Suriname. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews around the globe. Finally, he is also survived by special friend and confidante Sonia Maalaoui.
A Covid-Sensitive visitation for Mr. Sowma will be conducted on Friday, January 28 at the Anderson McQueen Funeral Home at 2201 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Street North in St Petersburg, FL from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT MASKS BE WORN AND SAFE DISTANCE MEASURES ARE TAKEN REGARDLESS OF VACINATION STATUS due to health and international travel restrictions/ramifications of the Sowma Family. Funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 1:30 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church at 200 78th. Ave NE in St Petersburg, FL. Father Bob Romaine will be the officiant.
Pallbearers serving Mr. Sowma will be Randall Goodling, Joey Mingione, Thiago Silva, and his family.
