We were his next door neighbors for many years before we moved to get away from the city. Him and Dorothy were the best. He was always working, either in the yard, up a tree, or more often than not, on his roof. We still wonder if he ever did finally find and fix that leak in the roof. We spent the most time with them when our house, next door to them was being tented for termites. We were planning on staying in a tent in our back yard, could not afford a motel room. But they would not have it, they opened their home to us and we were so grateful. That was when I learned that he had helped my former roommates steal everything from my house. He was always so helpful. I came home from work to find all my furniture and appliances gone. He thought he was helping them move out. Only thing was all the two of them owned was their clothes. Everything else was mine. We got a good laugh about that incident. Rest in peace dear friend, we will see you in heaven one day. And Dorothy, our prayers are with you always. God bless and comfort you. Know his life was a testament to the kind of man he was.

I remember all the fun camping trips, canoeing, and floating in the big rubber raft. Delbert timed everything we did. Sometimes it was frustrating, but mostly it was something to joke about. We used to say “stop paddling” just so we would mess up his time schedule. Rest In Peace dear friend. You don’t need a watch any more.

Dear Dorothy & family,
The memories of our times together over the years remind me of how blessed I was to know and spend time with Delbert. Walking with him through the woods was a great adventure since he knew all the scientific names of plants and animals. I will always marvel at how he could consume so much ice cream (Breyers) and never gain a pound. His morning practice of exercise and meditation was clearly important to him. And then there was that very distinctive laugh that I will never forget. I know he thought very deeply about God and faith as he wrote down his thoughts about scripture and the divine. Those summers at grandma Flachsbart's were also so much fun as the Cortright & Gerth families cam together as Delbert continued his academic studies. There were even a few times that Delbert would join in on a card game - it usually took time for him to play his hand as he thought through all the possible moves.
I am grateful for the short visit we had in March of this year. It was hard to see what this terrible disease had done to Delbert over these last years. But now he is at home with his creator God and is whole again with all the unique qualities that God made him to be. No doubt Delbert is enjoying some Breyers ice cream and having some thoughtful conversations with God and all the saints who had gone before him.
Dorothy & family, know that as you begin this journey of grief that God is present to comfort you and that you are never alone. The Good Shepherd - Jesus Christ - is with you always.
Peace & Love,
Jim & Karen
