Diane, I could not travel to the service because of a new round of nerve pain in my left leg - my bumpy landing in Panama continues to pay dividends. However, I was able to watch the service on-line, and yes, I shed tears more than once.
I wish I had been there to speak about serving under him when he was the CDR A/160. I enjoyed going to work almost every day when he was in CMD. It wasn't just the like minds pilot connection, but also the Ranger connection. I still laugh when I think of him telling the story of eating a pea Michael had just coughed up at dinner and giving a loud and vigorous "RAINJAR"
The crew chiefs played many subtle tricks on him (too numerous to mention) pushing the envelope just enough to get the predictable volcanic response, but not enough to result in mass punishment; and I can't count the number of times we would tell the waitress it was his birthday when eating on the road. He was OK with it if he got a free dessert, but told us to knock it off after a sombrero was jammed on his head at three different restaurants.
One of my best trips ever was the week we spent at Corpus Christi TX flying out to oil rigs. I flew with him the entire week and we had a great time. How many pilots can say they have enjoyed flying with their CDR for a week - I'd wager not many.
I could go on and on about Rocky boots, Eagle backpacks, Oakley sunglasses, the new duty position of the Byron Control Officer, and last but not least - the men without hats.
I never saw him scold a Soldier without due cause. He even took me to task once for intentionally storing my pistol with a round in the chamber.
On a sad note, I was a little disappointed not to see displayed, the naked and almost bald baby doll my daughter presented to him after he was wounded -which of course he loved.
A couple of years ago, when I was the FORSCOM Safety Director, he called me out of the blue from Jordan and talked for 45 minutes. That conversation was like we had never been apart. I'm so glad I got to see him again at the recent Alumni Social, and regret that I didn't get to talk more to you.
Not once did I see him even look at another woman when we were TDY. Faithful to the core and a Soldier's Soldier. The Big Ranger in the Sky will have his hands full now that Rick is there.
Please let us know the details of the burial at Arlington. Lord willing, Vickie and I will be there.

Beautiful service. Lorri and I watched from Kauai this morning. We are so deeply saddened by Rick’s passing and felt privileged to have seen him and Diane just a few nights before his passing at the Nightstalker Christmas party. I have too many stories from our old C Company days but they were the best of times with Rick. We have heavy, heavy hearts this rainy morning in Hawaii and our prayers go out to the family and Diane. What an incredible man. One of the absolutely best commanders I had the pleasure to serve with, Bn Cdr, 1-228th AV in Panama, 93-94. I learned so much from him about officership, mentorship, leadership, piloting, and just being a good soldier. The world is a darker place without Rick. My sincerest condolences to Diane and the family.

This really hurts! I was one of Rick Bowman's company commanders in Panama in the mid-1990s. I absolutely loved working for him because of his passion for both people and the mission. He worked tirelessly and never micromanaged, always allowing his Soldiers and officers (including me) to take risks, make mistakes and learn from them. We might just win a war one of these days if we had more Rick Bowman's in our force. But he was one of a kind.
Diane and family, we send our sincerest condolences. Lisa (Hudon) Wall, Joe Wall (former B Co 1/160th SOAR Flight Lead)

Diane…Connie and I are truly saddened over Rick’s passing. He was a superb soldier, and natural leader/commander at ALL levels Equally important is that he took great care of all…his family, his soldiers and their families and together, you and Rick were a terrific command team. He lit up everyone with terrific sense of humor and accessibility and I never doubted him during our time in the 160th. For whatever it’s worth, thought he did a terrific job as the RCO. Love L&C

Diane, I’m so sorry. I have many fond memories of both you and Rick from our time in the Task Force and when I was the DSOA. You were a great Command Team who cared for Soldiers and their families. I always admired Rick’s Command style he was tough but fair, a Soldier can’t ask for more than that. The other character trait of Rick was that he never did anything that benefitted him personally, everything he did was for his Soldiers and his peers. He truly made a difference in everything he touched. He will be missed. Randy and Sharon Cochran

Diane, There are no words to describe the man, the soldier, the Hero that Rick is to the Muse family. He is a legend. Someone who put his life on the line to save my husband and Kimberly and Erik's father.
I shall never forget meeting you for the first time in Clarksville. We were with you Rick and several other helicopter pilots. You asked me to tell the story. I shared and was humbled as being the soldier that Rick was he had never shared the story in such detail. Thank Diane for being his wife, his support, his companion. Hugs and love , Annie Kurt Kimberly and Erik

Diane, Nancy and I are saddened at the sudden loss of Rick. He was one of the finest and bravest officer and pilot that I know. As the A Company Commander, he led with distinction and superb leadership, taking great care of his troops and their families. Our rapid deployment to Panama in Dec ‘89 required us to execute several critical, time sensitive missions simultaneously. A Company ‘Little Birds’ had critical missions, one of which was the highly classified rescue of Mr. Muse from the Modelo Prison. Rick led the 4 MH-6 helicopters that delivered the Delta Force operators to the roof of the prison. Rick was wounded from enemy fire, but completed the successful mission. A true warrior Night Stalker of the highest order. I was proud that he later became the 160th RCO. Again, Nancy and I send our sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family.

I’m saddened to learn of the passing of a great soldier and leader. I had the pleasure and honor of serving with Col. Bowman in the 160th in the early to mid 80’s. At that time he was a Captain and XO of C Company prior to taking command of A Company and I was the non-rated maintenance tech. He was the kind of leader that made you want to do your best and he brought out the best in all of us. I’ll always remember him periodically coming into the maintenance office to see how we were doing, if we needed anything, carrying a styrofoam cup with a dip of snuff in his lower lip.
I salute you sir. My thoughts and condolences are with your family.
