Obituary of Ellen H. Smith

Smith, Ellen H., 93, of St. Petersburg, died Monday July 10, 2000 at Westminster Shores Health Center. Born in Cumberland County, VA, she came here in 1942 from Farmville, VA, where she had graduated from Longwood College. She also attended Bouve?-Boston in Boston, MA; Columbia University; William and Mary; Appalachian State University, Georgia Warm Springs; and St. Petersburg Jr. College. She was a 1st Lt. In the Army Medical Corps during WWII, serving part time in Europe. After leaving the army, she worked at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center Bay Pines. She became chief Physical Therapist at the American Legion Crippled Children?s Hospital for 17 years, working with the Florida Crippled Children?s Commission when poliomyelitis was at its height. She was employed by the Pinellas County Public School System as a special education teacher in charge of the Physical Therapy Department at Nina Harris Special Education Center until retirement. She was a charter member and a Recording Secretary of St. Luke?s United Methodist church, and also Chairman of the Records and History Committee. She was a member of St. Petersburg Business and Professional Woman?s Club, the Florida and Pinellas County Retired Teachers Association, and served on the National Chapter Committee of the American Physical Therapy Association. She was a charter member and Past President of the Florida Chapter, American Physical Therapy Association, and also served as the first Chairman of the Physical Therapist section of the Florida Medical Examining Board. Survivors include one brother, Dr. Maynard P. Smith and one niece, Eleanor Wellford, both of Richmond, VA.
