Obituary of Retired Major General Roland M. Gleszer

Gleszer, Retired Major General Roland M., 85, died Friday, August 25, 2000. Born in Brewer, ME, he came here in 1973 from Washington, D.C. where he retired from military service after 33 years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His major commands included the 5th Infantry Division Mechanized, Fort Carson, CO and the Military District of Washington, Washington, DC. He was an Infantry Commander in three wars, spent six years on the Army General Staff, and was Chief of the Army Mission to Saudi Arabia and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Task Force that tested the first hydrogen bomb at Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands. He was awarded two Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, Two Bronze Star Medals, the French Croiz de Gueere with Palm, the Polish Medal of Valor, the Combat Infantry Badge, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree, University of Maine. He was a member of the Board of Directors, Suncoast Tiger Bay Club; Member of Tampa Bay Area committee on Foreign Relations; a member of Coordinating committee of Florida West Coast Military Assistance to Traffic & Safety; member of University of Maine Development Council; a member of the Board of Directors of the SPCA of St. Petersburg; a member of St. Andrew?s Lodge #83 Free and Accepted Masons, Bangor, ME; Vice President of Pinellas County Sheriff?s Junior Deputies League; Former Director of Admissions for the Florida U.S. Military Academy; Past President of West Point Society of Florida West Coast, and Past Commander of the Military Order of World Wars. Survivors include a son, Peter E. Gleszer, Westlake Village, CA; a daughter, Susan M. Beaudry, Seattle, WA, and two granddaughters. Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home & Cremation Tribute Center ?
