In 1969 Dr. Hobby operated on my right knee cap (I collided with another player during a softball game). We were playing in Clearwater so I was taken to a hospital there. I ask the doctor there how long before I can play ball again, his response was "your ball playing days are over. Without hesitation I told the nurse to call an ambulance to transport me to St. Anthony's in St. Petersburg. When I arrived there I asked Dr. Hobby the same question "How long before I can play ball again?" His response " six weeks". I responded let's do it.

Dr Hobby was my neighbor 55 years ago when I was a child.
I grew up with all of his children. They were all my friends.
He was a good man who I greatly respected. He was genuinely interested in me and I will never forget that.
I learned a lot reading his obituary.
As it turned out we shared more in common then I realized. Like him my son Erik graduated from Emory University. I own a farm in the peanut area of GA not far from where he grew up. I spend two months every winter there.
Dr Hobby was a Porsche enthusiast. The first Porsche I ever saw was his new white 1965 912. I always wanted one from the day he drove that one home.
I have one because of him.
He had a great family and life!

Dr Hobby was my doctor when I was in a terrible accident at age 14 - 50 years ago. He treated me at All Children’s Hospital. The thing I want to share about him is about the surgery he performed on me. My right foot was nearly amputated at the time and he had to finish the amputation. All my life prosthetic professionals have marveled at my bk amputation and the skill in which it was done. I don’t really understand exactly how but I know it has been easier to fit me for new prosthetics the many times I needed them than others the prosthetic labs have helped. I am still up and about, walking with comfort with my prosthetic and have had a career in Respiratory Therapy. Thank you Dr. Hobby for doing such a great service with the excellent surgery. You made my life so much better. I just happened to be going through old papers today and found all the records from my accident and that is why I googled Dr Hobby. I wish I could have told this to him personally but maybe it will be a comfort to his loved ones. He was a great doctor and changed my life. -Marcy Rico-Dean

We were so fortunate to know Royce as a friend & a Dr. He was such a wonderful caring person in all aspects of his life. He came to the hospital to look after our son Jeff after surgery on his toe. He was in terrible pain at 4AM & Dr. Hobby came to the rescue. We loved he & Jane both & are so glad we got to know them & consider them friends. I know Royce will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our sympathy to all his family.

I was privileged to work in Dr. Hobby's office from 1979 to 2006. He was an excellent orthopedic surgeon as well as a fair and caring employer. He was never too busy to listen if there was a problem. He made it his business to be involved with his staff and you could tell that he cared about all of us. He had a HUGE practice and his patients loved him. Thank you Dr. Hobby and God bless you.

From Jeff on behalf of the Davis family (Sylvia & Kim) to the Hobby family:
Our deepest condolence on the loss of Dr Hobby (Royce)...he was more than just a great doctor, he was a kind, generous man and a friend. Dr Hobby performed a successful procedure on me at 11 years old that had a profound impact on my life at an early age...it provided me the opportunity to be a kid, to grow and continue to have a life with the ability to run and jump and to play tennis, which would prove to be my life's vocation.
I have tried throughout my life to never forget the gift that Dr Hobby gave to so many years ago and hope that I've proven worthy of such a gift.
Thank you Dr Hobby. We will all miss you.

I had the pleasure of taking care of Dr. Hobby the last 2 years and he was one of the sweetest men I have ever met. His smile would fill the room when he came in. The night before he passed he blew me kisses from the doorway of his bed. He has made me a better person and I will miss him so much.
