Family of Jack, please accept my most sincere condolences.
I also knew Jack from freshman year at Gonzaga through graduation from the Mount. Mickey Scanlon, Jack and I roomed together for a year at the Mount. The three of us were but a few in our class of 1961 who endured the "lofty" classes required to attain a Bachelor of Arts (AB) degree in English. We also shared a ride from the Mount to DC and back on countless weekends in Bill Jenkins' 1958 Ford convertible.
Jack was always easy going, and fun to hang with, and sometimes esoteric beyond our understanding. An example: One morning, Jack, Mickey and I were hauled into the Prefect of Discipline's office accused of an off-campus violation late the previous night. Having prepared ahead of time, Mickey and I related reasonable and "innocent" tales of where we were at the time. When it was Jack's turn, he paused and then stated forcefully, "I WAS OUT THERE!". Huh? Thanks to Jack, the priest broke out laughing and the three of us were released without punishment.
Simply put, Jack was a really nice guy and a good pal. I also knew beautiful and sweet Maureen. They were a wonderful couple.
Rest in peace,
Bob Thornett

Jack and I were Classmates at both Gonzaga High School and Mount Saint Mary's University. I have fond memories of Jack, Buddy Pumphrey, Timmy Gallagher, and myself running around Bethesda Chevy Chase during our last 2 years at Gonzaga. I can remember us driving down to Gonzaga on some evenings together to practice for the Gonzaga One Act Play Contest, and our Act, I think it was called "Summer Comes to the Diamond O", actually winning the contest. Jack and I both played the guitar, and each of us sang several songs, solo, when we were with the Mount Saint Mary's University Glee Club. I last saw Jack briefly at the Gonzaga High School 50th Class Reunion (2007) at the High School in Washington, DC. I remember Maureen Whittinghill (sp?) O'Connell well, as we had gone on numerous double dates together. I still can visualize her beautiful big smile, and I knew that they were meant for each other. They have re-joined together with the Lord.

To Family and Friends of "Jack" O'Connell:
I am sorry for your loss as I knew Jack to be a wonderful man, full of stories and fun to be around. I both sailed with him, and against him in various sailboat races thru the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He was a great competitor, and friend to all who knew hime. He also encouraged people to sail and helped many under privileged young people to be introduced to sailing, by having them sail with him on his boat "Gael Force". He is with the Lord now in Heaven, I am sure!
Best wishes,
Denis Koelsch
