Obituary of Alton E. Al'' Steele

Steele, Alton E. ?Al?, 72, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday December 26, 2000 at St. Anthony?s Hospital. Born in Reading, Massachusetts, he came here in 1962 from Orlando. He was a retired CPA having received his accounting degree from the University of South Florida where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. He also was a 1951 graduate of Baylor University, Waco, Texas. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #139 of St. Petersburg, past president of Sunshine City Kiwanis, a life member of Kiwanis International, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Council, an Eagle Scout, senior master of the American Contract Bridge League, former vice president of Stockton, Whatley & Davin Insurance, a Master Mason of the 32nd degree, a Shriner with Valley of Tampa, and a member of the National Audubon Society, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and the Rhode Island Historic Society. He was a Navy veteran having served during the Korean War and was a cryptologist with the Department of Navy. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Charlotte H. Steele; 2 daughters, Alison Steele and Roberta S. Wall, both of St. Petersburg; 3 sons, David Steele of Sterling, Virginia, and Gary Steele and Bruce Steele, both of Reno, Nevada; 2 step-daughters, Marilyn McKenney of Stafford, Virginia and Michele Downs of St. Paul, Minnesota; 3 sisters, Alison Towle of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Madelyn Hunt of North Andover, Massachusetts and Joan Howley of Westwood, Massachusetts; a brother, Bradley Steele of Redding, Massachusetts; 9 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, Burn Unit for Children, 12502 North Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.
