Obituary of James Goodwin Mixson

Mixson, James Goodwin, 82, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday, April 07, 2001 at St. Anthony?s Hospital after a short illness. Dr. Mixson's family moved to Levy County, Florid in the early 1800's. As fifth generation Floridian, he was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida, he lived in Tampa from 1918 until 1936 and was a graduate of Plant High School. He was a graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Louisville ? School of Dentistry where he was also a faculty member for many years. He was a Diplomat of the Society of Oral & Maxillary Surgery and member of the American Dental Association; Florida Dental Association; West Coast Dental Association and Pinellas County Dental Association. In addition to his faculty position, Dr. Mixson also had a private dental practice in Louisville, KY for ten years prior to moving to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1959. Locally, Dr. Mixson maintained a dental practice from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. He was also an active cattleman with a ranch in Indiana. He served in the United States Marine Corp during WWII and was a Captain in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was both a member and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg. He served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army; Board of Directors of City Bank now Sun Trust; Board of Directors of Sun Trust Bank. He was an avid sailor and member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He also enjoyed golf and was a prior member of the Palma Ciea Country Club in Tampa. Dr. Mixson is survived by his wife of 55 years, Loraine Benz Mixson of St. Petersburg; a son, A. James Mixson, M.D. of Rockville, Maryland; a daughter, Elizabeth Mixson Lunt of Pelham Manor, NY; four grandchildren, Clair and James Mixson, both of Rockville, Maryland and Virginia C. and James B. Lunt, both of Pelham Manor, NY.
