Obituary of Winifred C. Winnie'' Green

Green, Winifred Connelly ?Winnie?, 89, of St. Petersburg, died Friday November 30, 2001 in New York City after a short illness while visiting her daughter. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she came here in 1997 from Dalton, Massachusetts. She was a retired teacher who devoted 55 years to the students and teachers of Berkshire County. Her last appointment was to the State Department of Education where she was the first woman to hold the position of Senior Supervisor of Elementary Education. Upon her retirement, she was given the Paul Revere Award, the first woman to receive such an honor, as well as a ?pride in performance? citation given by then Governor Michael S. Dukakis. Other awards, including an International Reading Association Commendation, were given. She was a founder of the Berkshire Chapter in the early 1940?s and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority where she held several offices in the Berkshire County Chapter. After graduating from Framingham Normal School in 1931, she began her career teaching grades 5-8 in the Berkshire Village School at the age of 19. She later earned a Masters Degree from North Adams State College and another 72 hours of graduate credit at the university level. She was appointed as the first principal of Lanesborough Elementary School after 17 years of teaching, serving 7 years. She then moved to Dalton Junior High School as Vice-Principal and teacher for 10 years. She then joined the State Department of Education in 1967. She also taught on a college level. She was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton, Massachusetts; and in Florida, she was a member of Holy Cross Parish where she was President of the Legion of Mary, a member and past officer in the Women?s Club, and past president and treasurer of the Fordham Building Owner?s Association. Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Marie Green of New York City, several nieces and nephews and countless friends.
