Obituary of George Mitchell

Mitchell, George, 77, of St. Petersburg, died suddenly of a stroke on Monday, January 26, 2004 at St. Anthony?s Hospital. Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he came here in 1951 from Greensboro, North Carolina, where he grew up and attended the University of North Carolina. He served in the Navy during World War II. George was an avid sports fan his entire life. He sponsored softball and basketball teams to earn championship acclaim. He was often the pitcher and served as a valuable leader of several successful teams. He had always been a Chicago Cubs baseball fan and was a huge follower of the Carolina Tar Heels. At the time, he was also one of Pinellas County?s top builders, constructing over 100 homes a year. He was the owner of Mitchell Builder Homes and past President of Lakewood Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf and tennis. Of all his successes, he considered his family his greatest accomplishment. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Margie; two brothers, Michel Mitchell and Johnny Mitchell, both of Greensboro; one sister, Elaine Ellis of St. Petersburg; four daughters, Lori Holmes of Southwest Ranches, Florida, Micki Hall of Tallahassee, Pam Jordan of Tallahassee, and Toni Hutchenson of Orlando; thirteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
