Whenever I think back to my early years at the St. Petersburg Times and getting accustomed to the ups and downs of daily journalism (especially on the hectic night shift), Craig Basse always come to mind from our years on the B Desk and later on the City Desk staff. What a good role model he was! He could keep an open ear to the colleague or reporter with a concern or question, a studied eye on the key thread of the story, suggest and/or edit in decisive language and make judicious choices about tone and flow. And all the time, he was calm, kind, measured and quick to smile that sweet smile.I want Joyce and your children to know that many of us admired Craig greatly and treasured him as a colleague and a friend.

My deepest sympathy on losing Craig Basse, a true and caring gentleman.I knew Craig through the Times (I retired in 2002). I am active in the Jewish community, and would give him a 'heads up' when someone passed on who deserved a bigger-than-average obit. He was always most responsive. I have done as requested in the obit -- I called our former co-worker, Nancy Paradis, who is at Hospice. I'd been dragging my heels on making personal contact, but this morning's obit request got me to do it. (Thanks!)

Craig was my lifeline through the first year of my employment here in Port Richey News doing obits. He was always so patient with questions. Of course, his directions were always precise. He always encouraged me when I was overwhelmed with this work. When my Dad and brother passed he was extremely helpful in wording their obituaries.(Something I never dreamed that I would do.)Craig and Joyce have been in my prayers. I owed much to Mr. Basse. With deepest sympathy, Lucille Lazich

I don't think I've met a finer gentleman than Craig Basse. In my 14 years at the Times, I found myself smiling the second I saw him because he was always so pleasant to deal with. And when my grandmother died he was extremely kind, helping me craft a paid obit and get the right picture in the paper. Thousands of readers, I know, have the same gratitude that during a time of grief, he was a comforting helper.

Craig was a mentor and a friend. It was my honor and joy to work for him and learn from him. He helped set my feet firmly on the road to success--I owe him so much. I know he will be dearly missed by so many, but none so much as his family. My deepest sympathy to Joyce and to all of you. What an amazing man.

Having Craig as a colleague was a great comfort to those of us who treasure reason and kindness, yet work in a business that deals with a lot of human irrationality and meanness. When I came to the Times, Craig was one of the first people I met in the newsroom. He was on the Regional Desk at the time, and I remember how impressed I was that someone could be so caught up in what appeared to be eight hours plus of chaos and remain so efficient and calm. When I got to know him better we shared our interest in gardening; he was that rare thing, a Renaissance man.My thoughts are with you, his family, at this sad time; I will always cherish the memory of Craig.

Dear Joyce,Howard Troxler here. This is an impersonal way to speak to you but I wanted to write this first, and then send you a proper card and maybe we will be able to speak later.I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed knowing Craig during my 17 years at the Times, how much that we thought the same way about things (and sometimes complained the same way about things), and how much I have missed him and will miss him.As for you, I cannot imagine what you have gone through and will be going through, and can only say that I will send you strength and love and best wishes, and that you will be foremost in my thoughts. Until we speak in person...Howard
