Obituary of June P. Johnson

June P. Johnson, 98, of St. Petersburg , Florida passed away peacefully at her home on March 8, 2018. She was born January 26, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Grace Purper, and her husband of 69 years, Dr. L. Wayne Johnson. Because of her dad's work opening offices for Advanced Aluminum Company, June spent part of her youth living in Kansas City, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Tacoma, Washington, returning to Chicago when she was eleven. June graduated from Austin High School, where she was president of the student council her senior year and president of the honor society her junior year. She graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago with a major in Speech. It was there she met Wayne, a student in the medical school. They married in 1946 and she taught high school English and Drama at Maine Township High School. In 1950, his residency brought them to St. Petersburg where they settled permanently. In 1953, they and their two young daughters, Kathy and Laurie, relocated to Japan, as Wayne served as an Air Force physician for two years. The family resettled in St. Petersburg in 1954, enjoying a full life in the community. June was a member of St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Anthony's Hospital Auxiliary, Feather Sound Country Club, St. Petersburg Racquet Club, and the First Church of Christ, Scientist, St. Petersburg and Boston. Her strong faith began as a young child and brought her strength and comfort throughout her life. More than anything, she loved being with her family and friends. Her favorite hobbies were playing bridge and reading, she loved traveling the world, playing tennis, and her hometown of Chicago. June is survived by her daughters, Kathy Adams and husband Jim of Greenwich, CT, Laurie Epps and her husband Steve of Asheville, NC; granddaughters Karlyn Adams, Roanne Adams Wahba and husband Johnny, and grandson Daniel Epps; and great granddaughters Sienna and Phaedie. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to her devoted caregivers and the management of Generations at Home, and to At Home Fitness and Suncoast Hospice. On March 22, 2018, the family will receive friends beginning at 11:00am, with June's memorial service at 11:30 and a reception immediately following, all at Anderson McQueen funeral home, located at 2201 Dr. MLK Jr St. N., St. Petersburg.
