Kim and family,
I just received my IUP Alumni magazine and was saddened to see that my friend and former roommate at IUP in Kittanning, "Sig", passed away in July. I'm so sorry for this delayed response. I live in Michigan now and quickly let another roommate, Ronnie Wahl, know as well. There were 6 of us who "roomed" together on one floor of a house in 1978/79. Sig (never called him Don!!! Ha, ha) roomed with Chuck Donaldson, also from Pittsburgh and all 6 of us graduated from IUP in Criminology. I think all 5 went on in the Law Enforcement arena. I'm in Automotive!
We had such a good time and all 6 were always together. We had a flag football team that was pretty darn good. But Sig would always crack us up by wearing his Steel Valley all gold game uniform. So funny!!! I can still see him in my mind!
We're all older now and some of the memories have gone. But, I wanted you all to know that I spent 4 of the best years of my life with your husband and father, and enjoyed every minute of that time. Sure wish I could turn back the hands of time and revisit those precious days at IUP.
One more thing: My uncle is a Catholic Priest currently stationed at St. Therese in Munhall. We went there for his 50th Anniversary a few years back and when pulling in, I immediately thought "hey, this is were Sig is from" as we drove by Steele Valley. I also let my wife know that too.
He'll always be remembered.

Kim, Don, Rachel, Anthony,
Sig and I went to IUP together. We always talked a few times a year and tried many times to connect face to face either here in Pittsburgh or Tampa when I was on business. It just never happened for one reason or another. However he was a great friend who will be missed by many from IUP and Steel Valley area! He would always tell me how much you all meant to him and how proud he was to have such a great family!!!! Sig was one of a kind as you know. I always admired his humble nature and shared his love for the Pirates and Steelers, occasionally the Penguins not that either one of us ever skated!!! Anytime I have an Iron City, I know Sig is with us, many times he would be having one as we talked on the phone in your driveway. God Bless Sig and your family!! His spirit will always be with you!!!

Everyone who worked with Sig now has a void in them. Don was a great classmate in the Academy,a partner and a loyal friend throughout the years past his retirement from SPPD. Don is a honored member of the "Chapel". We studied hard and the weekends on Mad Beach were always memorial. He always recalled that admin. said none of us would make it through the whole process. Don and the rest of us proved them wrong. Shine on you crazy diamond !!!

Sig was one of the greatest street COPs that I ever served with. I know that he was a wonderful Husband/Father /Family man.
I am sure that his last conscious thoughts were of the love he had for his Wife and family.
May God hold his family in the palm of his hand and bring peace and comfort to all that love and miss him.

Don and his family were our next door neighbors in St Petersburg. We always felt safe with Don next door. While we were away he would watch over our house and our dogs. He would even come and spend time with them. We returned to Florida for a visit after we sold our house there and Mickey our dog first went to our old driveway, sniffed the vehicle, not familiar then went right up Sigley's driveway to their front door! Don came to the door and all was well. Don was not a good man he was a GREAT man. May he rest in peace. Life well lived.

The Sigley Family holds a special place in my heart. While teaching at St. Paul's, I was privileged to teach both Rachel and Don. Anyone who has had any connection to this family knows how they rise to the top of the heap (although they would not acknowledge this due to their humility). If the honesty and goodness of a puppy coupled with determination and solid humanity can be embodied, it certainly has been in this family. Mr. Sigley has most surely made a positive mark on the human race, and his family, while grieved at his loss, holds the power of love and humility to carry them through.
Love,
Gary Betts

I am so sorry to hear this news Kim. Our minds search for explanations so we can understand, but we just can't because there really is no explanation that can give us peace. All we can do is grieve, mourn and resolve to carry on, allowing that person to live on inside us and do what we can for those still with us. My sincere condolences and prayers for you and your family.
