I will miss my friend, Scott “Beam Me up Scotty” or “Vern” as some of us called him, Smith. Reflecting on Scott, these words come to mind.
LOVING – Scott’s love for Kate knew no bounds. He would get a big grin on his face and his eyes lit up each time he mentioned Kate. Scott told me he gave up drinking because he never wanted to let Kate or his kids down. When frustrated with a concern for his son or daughter, Scott would tell me he loved them deeply and would do all possible to support and help them have a good life. Towards the end even when in pain and feeling very tired, Scott looked forward to the visits of his grandbaby bragging “we have everything in our house that he has at home.. I love and look forward to his visits!” When Scott was pretty much confined to bed, we talked behind closed doors. Scott would share his biggest concern was making sure everything was in place to help Kate have a good life when he passed. Scott loved God telling me even though he was anxious, at the same time, he was at peace knowing he would be living in God’s home.
LOYAL – Scott was loyal to his family, his friends, his country, his peers, and his employees. There are many examples, here is one. Flying home after a particularly long and difficult work week, Scott had a bad headache telling me all he wanted to do was go home, be with Kate, put his feet up and relax. Did this happen, no? His daughter was playing in a softball game and he had me drop him off at the field so he could show his support. Upon arriving at the field, Scott grabbed his suitcase, put a smile on his face, and went to the game.
PASSION – Scott was passionate about learning. He wanted to be the best father, friend, co-worker, employee, and manager. To achieve this Scott read, studied, asked questions, and sometimes bugged my nerves, as he pushed to ensure he had the knowledge and understanding needed to see that he and his team were the best and provided the best service to our customers.
HELPFUL – Scott’s offers of assistance knew no bounds. Scott made himself available 24/7, 365 days a year to help out with a personal or professional concern. If he knew or heard about someone needing help, despite a busy schedule, Scott would call offering assistance. Scott came to me one day sharing you always tell us “do the right thing”. He shared that he has an employee with a family medical need requiring her to be at home but financially, she cannot afford to miss work. Scott shared “I know what the policy says but we need to do the right thing”. We ended up doing it “their way, our way” allowing the employee to be at home and be paid. Scott also made sure several of us made financial donations to help out.
SUMMARY – It was my good fortune when Scott came to me interviewing for a technical position on our team. He impressed me with his calm demeanor, zeal for learning, background, but most of all Scott’s sincere honesty about why he wanted to join us. Scott became a friend and a valued employee. When I left Progress Energy (Duke), Scott was one of two employees I asked to go with me. Why – because I knew that Scott would bring the best and help us be the best due to his character traits listed in this tribute. Scott, there is so much more we could share. I know these few words do not do you justice, but with your humility you are probably embarrassed by them. Those of us who know and care about you will forever carry you in our hearts. Dolly and I regret not being available to attend your memorial service this Saturday. We will be with you and everyone in spirit.
Your friend,
Rudy
