I am so sorry for you loss. I have so many memories of sailing with the family in my teens and college years. I thought I would share a few stories that have been on my mind since Dad told me of his passing.
I sailed two Thistle mid winter regattas with the Glover family out of St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Tom and I were both at Michigan and we would fly from Ann Arbor to Cincinnati as soon as classes were over for spring break. My parents would meet me at the airport with all my sailing gear in a bag. And the Glover parents would also be there with the van and the boat - one time two ( we doubled trailered two Thistles) in tow. We would leave from the airport and drive straight thru to Tampa Bay.
All 4 of us shared a hotel room - Nina and I in one bed and Tom and his Dad in the other. I remember having scrambled eggs with ham for breakfast cooked on a electric skillet in the room. I also remember a lot of calls for "Nina where's my salt" as she kept a potassium salt substitute in her purse. We stopped at Disney World for a day on the return trip, my first time every being there - loved Space Mountain.
I don't remember how we did but the sailing was great and I was really pleased to be invited to go again a second year. After that I think our spring breaks didn't line up with the regatta anymore and Tom graduated a year before I did.
I also remember the casino New Year's Eve parties that they had at their house every year. What a blast, especially for a high school kid to go to a New Year's Eve party that included all my sailing friends and their parents.
So many fond memories and good times. The Cowan Lake Sailing Association was a great community of friends.
Wishing you peace and my best thoughts.

I remember Rod very well. He was one of the best managers I ever worked for at P&G, and we had a close relationship.
I remember how he used to take his vacations using up single Fridays and Mondays in warm weather to generate long weekends when he would go sailing on his boat on Lake Erie. Then one winter he changed and used up his entire vacation allotment in several two-week-long segments in January and February going to Florida.
In March, he called me into his office and said he had something to tell me. I responded by saying “You’re retiring, and you’re taking your boat to Florida to live and sail!” He said yes but how did I know. I answered by describing his shift in his vacation pattern and his love of sailing and said it wasn’t hard to figure out. He had been going to Florida to find a place to live and anchor his boat. He even thought about just living on his boat in the water with no home on land for a while.
Then he said something I will always remember. He said he was talking with someone he respected describing his conflict of wanting to do more sailing while he was healthy enough to do so but at the same time wanting to work longer to get to a full retirement for the money. His friend asked if he had enough money already to retire now, and if not, how much more did he need. Rod said he did have enough now. His friend then said, “Then how greedy do you want to be? What’s more important – more money or enjoying the things in life that were important to him while he was healthy enough to do so?” Rod said that comment made retiring then a simple decision. He retired early, sailed the Caribbean, took pictures, wrote articles for sailing magazines, and loved life. A real role model.
I miss and respect him.
