Lt. Hay was just a wonderful person. Back when I was in the fire academy 23 years ago I remember Lt. Hay as a kind person that knew his craft, but was humble and always willing to spend time working with people that were struggling. Everyone loved Lt. Hay because he didn’t scream at us or belittle us, he just wanted to make sure we knew our job. God rest his soul and may his family find peace. District Chief Lance Volpe, Seminole Fire Rescue

Steve was a great guy, and with his family, a long-time friend of my brother and our family. I remember his dad Ralph, and his brother Vinnie too, and his lovely sisters. Steve and my brother used to come tumbling up the stairs in the middle of the night to my garage apartment in Old Northeast 40 years ago, when my brother was home from college. Making too much racket, barely stifled, they'd whack the door hard and burst in for a few hours of too much fun. I'm sure the neighbors loved it, especially my 83 year old landlord. Steve was a big, loud, friendly, fun wiseguy with a quick smile in those days, and always, I'm sure, even though I hadn't seen him in about ten years. He was always gregarious and hospitable, proud of his work and his fine family, Joanna and Conor. My condolences to Steve's mom, Joanna and Conor, and Karen and Diana. Steve will be missed and mourned by many.

I first met Steve in 1987 when my son Jesse and I started at the Bushido Academy. Along with Mr. Hall, Mr. Fyock, and Craig Manning, Steve was one of my instructors. His sense of humor was immediately apparent. Somehow getting the stuffing knocked out of you was easier to take when it was Steve tossing you around, like some rag doll. He was immensely strong but his greatest strength was his character.
My heart goes out to Joanna who I met all those years ago, and to Connor whom I've yet had the pleasure to meet. A love like theirs was beautiful to witness.
Al Tetrault.

My heart goes out to Joanna, Conor and all members of the Hay family. It is with sadness, shock and in loving memory of Steve that I am writing this. Joanna was one of my first friends at St Pete Catholic High School. Back then, it wasn’t long before Joanna and her girlfriends welcomed another to their pack — Steve. When anyone mentioned “Joanna and Steve,” it was like one word, because they were inseparable. One of the first to marry and then stay married for so many years, they were truly an all American couple, hometown sweethearts like the kind you read about. Steve embodied strength. Not only was he by Joanna’s side, you knew he had your back too. He was incredibly kind to so many people, but especially to Joanna’s friends. He was an empathetic listener, a protector and always ready with an easy smile and a joke. Joanna and Steve bought a house around the corner from where I grew up. I have fond memories of Steve playing with Conor in the front yard when he was little. Years later, we would chat in the yard about where Conor might go to college. I can’t believe Steve is gone! My condolences to Steve’s sisters, his mother and his son Conor. To my friend Joanna, I am here for you.
Sincerely,
Karen Landers

Joanna, Conor, Diana , Mrs Hay and all the Hay family . My sincere condolences. What a man! Steve was such a good friend and a great partner to me . He was such a giver and never would ask for anything back. Hard working, dedicated and professional are just a few words to describe him on the job. Steve, I miss you already! Just the picture of Steve made me smile, I know how much he liked being in a dress uniform and tie! I have so many memories from saving lives to him being struck by lightning .
Steve, I will make a promise to you: Denise and I will always be there for Joanna and Conor.
I Love you brother Rest In Peace
Ron Kidwell
