Obituary of George B. Crawford

Crawford, George B., 86, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday February 6, 2002. Born in Sandersville, GA, he lived in Sebring from 1922 until 1935. He was a 1935 Graduate of Sebring High School and was a multi-sport player. He was Captain of Sebring?s 1935 All Conference Football team and was nicknamed ?Galloping Gus? due to his speed. He came here in 1956 from Gulfport, MS. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army during WWII. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Service Medal. He worked as a Corrective Therapist at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bay Pines and retired after 22 years of service. He was an active Boy Scout Leader and member of Azalea Baptist Church. He was a Little League Coach, Manager and Honorary Life Member of the Board of Directors for the Azalea Little League. He was also a trainer for the Dixie Hollins High School football team. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Kathleen H.; one daughter, Carlan LeMaster, Treasure Island, FL; two sons: Scott and G. Braxton ?Chip??, both of St. Petersburg; one sister, Peggy Hammer, Lakeland, FL; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
